This is the Hotel Belvedere, which is found on a hairpin bend on the road up to the Furkapass, opposite the car park where you can (pay to) view the Rhone glacier and walk in an ice cave. Despite being abandoned, this building has an obvious photographic charm. It’s more common to see it taken from straight in front, either by day or by night. But the problem at night, when shooting with a wide angle lens, as I was here (14mm Samyang for the geeks), you have a light behind you that casts a double shadow of the photographer across the road. The advantage of the pass road at night is that there are fewer vehicles and you can see one coming from a long way off, giving you plenty of time to set up the shot. Then it’s just a case of doing a few tests to get the right ISO to allow you to shoot for about 10 seconds so that the light trails fill the frame.
